The Island Shoemaker

For those interested in sustainable living, the farm offers a small eco-cabin which, in line with the farm’s principles, has a low-impact on the local environment. The cabin, which overlooks the quay, has stunning views across the Eastern Isles and is only two minutes from the beach. Built in granite, the cabin blends with its island surroundings. Lighting is provided by a windmill, refrigeration by photovoltaic solar cells.  A wormery allows efficient recycling of cabin wastes and the cooker is run on electricity produced in a sustainable way. The essence of the cabin is simplicity-white-washed walls, red, quarry-tiled floors and gingham curtains-all very much in keeping with island tradition. We hope that, like us, you will consider it’s worth making the effort to safeguard and protect our island heritage.

The cabin is 4 berth, having two small bedrooms (one double and one with bunk beds) but there is a garden summerhouse with  additional bunk beds. ​The cabin is fully equipped for self-catering but you will need to bring duvet covers, towels etc. The kitchen area  has a full-sized electric cooker, microwave and fridge and there is a toilet and shower. A windmill adjacent to the cabin provides electricity for lighting. A wormery and recycling system are available for disposal of cabin wastes in an environmentally-friendly manner.A small sun lounge allows full enjoyment of the  outstanding views even out of season. There is also an outside dining area. If you want a rest from cooking, snacks and lunches are available from our café which is also open for bistro meals and take-aways four evenings a week. 200 metres from safe, sandy beaches, the cabin is only a short walk from the island Stores and 5 minutes from the quay from which, in Summer, boat trips depart daily for the other islands. Farm produce, freshly-baked wholemeal rolls and local fish are available according to season.
